Primary Principles means of escape and egress

  • In the event of fire , the occupants of any part of a building must be able to escape without being rescued .
  • Means of escape is a planned escape route designed to lead and direct occupants to a safe place ( ex. outside of the building ) .
  • The escape route shall be the shortest route to a place of safety .
  • If possible , alternative means of escape shall be provided .
  • In large compelxes , the route instead can lead to the protected staircase / corridor and later to final exit .
Thus the means of escape can be consisted of :
  • Unprotected areas , leading direct to exit
  • Protected areas must be free of combustible materials .
