- In the event of fire , the occupants of any part of a building must be able to escape without being rescued .
- Means of escape is a planned escape route designed to lead and direct occupants to a safe place ( ex. outside of the building ) .
- The escape route shall be the shortest route to a place of safety .
- If possible , alternative means of escape shall be provided .
- In large compelxes , the route instead can lead to the protected staircase / corridor and later to final exit .
Thus the means of escape can be consisted of :
- Unprotected areas , leading direct to exit
- Protected areas must be free of combustible materials .
