Extinguishment by Smothering
- Smothering effect of water is when water turn into steam ( liquid to vapour ) , its volumeterc pressure increase about 1000 times .
- THis saturated steam dislaces an equal amount of air surrounding fire .
- This will reduce the volume of air ( oxygen ) available to sustain the combustion .
- Enough steam must be produce to suppress the flame .
- Foaming agent is added to water to expedite the process of smothering .
- In the case where oxygen is produced while a burning material decomposes , smothering by any agent ( including water ) is not possible .
