Extinguishment by Smothering

  • Smothering effect of water is when water turn into steam ( liquid to vapour ) , its volumeterc pressure increase about 1000 times .
  • THis saturated steam dislaces an equal amount of air surrounding fire .
  • This will reduce the volume of air ( oxygen ) available to sustain the combustion .
  • Enough steam must be produce to suppress the flame .
  • Foaming agent is added to water to expedite the process of smothering .
  • In the case where oxygen is produced while a burning material decomposes , smothering by any agent ( including water ) is not possible .
